2012 is actually a year I like a great deal. I don’t think Argo deserved the Oscar, but I did find it to be a better film than both the previous two Best Picture winners. But I guess, I do understand why Argo won. It was a safe choice and it had a story that was bound to connect with the ‘American’ side of most voters. That said, this year for me, was the year of Paul Thomas Anderson and Quentin Tarantino. Quite possibly two of the greatest Gen X filmmakers to come out of the 90’s whose films were the ones that stood out among a fairly great crowd of films. Obviously the Academy didn’t have the balls to give Best Picture to a film about Scientology or slavery, but I on the other hand, do.

LOVE the Looper love and the Gandolfini nom! Love Hoffman in Lead!
I also love how different we are this year. This is what I tell to Josh all the time…but I love how The Fistis and The CinSpecs are so different every year…and now The Blazing Reel Film Awards. It shows so much diversity within the cinematic year.
Great work!

Killing Them Softly and Gandolfini are very underrated. Ditto for Looper. They deserved some recognition

I love these posts, Khalid. Django was my fav, but I also enjoyed The Master. Complex and internal, it wasn’t for everyone. PTA is a master himself. Joaquin deserved a nomination here. Silver Lining surprised the hell out of me. It was a great romance where i was really rooting for the characters. Thanks for this interesting article.

Thanks for reading Dan! Glad we agree on all these movies. The Master was probably one of PTA least accessible films to date but I agree it was complex, thought-provoking and exceedingly well made.
Loved both Joaquin and Hoffman but I think Joaquin was slightly better so I gave him the win.

PTA makes “Pictures” right. He’s one of the few directors focused on framing and composition and movement. I feel like the Master had some of his most beautiful still shots. Like on the boat, Joaquin on the rails. Beautiful. I also liked the Scientology parallels too. I’m familiar with their history from schooling. PTA nailed a lot of the more unsettling ideas behind its founder. I also thought the actor who portrayed Hoffman’s son on screen was a real surprise talent. I’d like to see more of him too.

Exactly. The Master is probably his most visually sublime movie to date, it’s full of gorgeous imagery and yeah the performances from Phoenix, PSH and even Amy Adams as well are great. I think the narrative struggles at times to get it’s point across but I consider this to be a very minor flaw.

Agreed. Less about narrative, more about character and themes. This isn’t so much a movie about plot or succeeding a mission.

I love the way you list the nominees and winner, very organized and clear. I was so impressed by Emily Blunt in Looper! Y’know, I honestly can’t remember much about Silver Linings Playbook now, though I remember liking it after I saw it.

Thank you Ruth! Looper was a pleasant surprise and so was Emily Blunt in it. I loved Silver Linings, I think it’s right up there with O. Russell’s best work

Very intriguing list, some inspired choices mostly with The Master and Emily Blunt in her supporting role in Looper. She seems to have come flying in out of nowhere — she’s been flipping excellent lately and she rightly deserves it.
Damn you, John Krasinski.

Thanks Tom. I always felt Looper never got the attention that it deserved, awards-wise at least.
John Krasinski is a lucky man

Yes he is, especially when you consider that his wife is the definite breadwinner of the household. Lol! I like him enough but his film career doesn’t really attract me.
