Ever since it went into production Fantastic Four has been the subject of massive controversy from the casting of Michael B. Jordan as the Human Torch to the news of director Josh Trank’s bad behaviour on-set – something which allegedly got him fired from his Star Wars too – It’s a film that seems to have been doomed from the very start and well let’s just say that all these problems have manifested themselves in the worst way possible.
I’m not gonna try to explain the plot since well, there isn’t any, so basically this movie follows the story of four ‘outsiders’ as IMDb puts it, played by Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Michael B. Jordan (yes, they become the Fantastic 4) who get teleported into an alternate dimension, get these weird powers, blah, blah, origin story, blah, blah they need to learn how to use these powers, blah, blah, there’s a friend who’s turned into their enemy. This is usually the plot-line for every first super-hero movie in a franchise and I usually don’t mind it. But you see, Fantastic Four isn’t like every other superhero movie.
Fantastic Four feels is the prime example of a studio meddling too much with a film, up to a point where even the studio doesn’t know exactly what they’ve ended up with.
For the first two acts Fantastic Four is not a bad movie. There is decent exposition, the backstories are good, the character development is well-varied and the movie feels like it’s building towards something promising. Even the controversial new story which offers a far more science fiction based approach to the origin story seemed like a fresh and promising idea. I was even starting to buy the actors as younger versions of the Fantastic Four. Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Toby Kebbell and even Jamie Bell felt particularly well-cast in their respective roles
And then it all went horribly wrong.
Now as I already mentioned, there is nothing particularly bad about Fantastic Four in the first two acts but right around the hour mark things began to take a turn for the worse and suddenly it did not feel as if I was watching the same movie anymore. It’s amazing how quickly this movie goes off the rails and within twenty minutes a number of major plot-elements are thrown out that never mesh together properly, the story makes absolutely no sense and suddenly all the characters in the film turn into unengaging cardboard boxes. When we are finally introduced to the Doctor Doom, not only does he look like the product of C-3P0 having sex with a crash dummy but there is absolutely no reason or explanation for him to be the way he is and he has barely any motivation at all for being evil in the first place. Doctor Doom is such a poor villain that he makes Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze look amazing by comparison. And don’t even get me started on the terrible f–king CGI. It assure you, it will make you cringe
The film’s climactic battle, which by-the-way is supposed to be the film’s center-piece lasts for barely fifteen minutes and feels both forced and incredibly dull, not to mention the events that occur have almost no bearing on the story or the world it is set in. The final act of this film is atrocious in every sense of the word, so bad that it derails all the promise the film builds on earlier, and you know what? I don’t completely blame Josh Trank either, sure the movie lacks ambition and creativity but the most glaring flaw of the film is that it feels like someone took a pair of scissors and cut out entire chunks of the movie only to replace it with meaningless garbage.
Fantastic Four is a superhero movie that never happens, it’s an hour of build-up combined with fifty minutes of nonsensical garbage that makes little sense. And quite honestly I don’t blame the people who are calling it to be a worse movie than Batman & Robin, at least Batman & Robin knows that it’s campy and cheesy, this movie tries to be serious and solemn and falls flat on its face. Avoid it at all costs.

I honestly don’t understand why they felt it necessary to do a reboot of this to begin with.😕

They could have actually done it well if the studio didn’t cut out entire scenes from the movie. I can recall seeing a dozen different shots from scenes that are not in the movie

That’s too bad. I don’t think I’ll even bother with this when it comes out on dvd.

You’d be better off not watching it.

HAHAHA, Love your analogy on Doctor Doom. He does look like the product of C-3PO having sex with a crash dummy. Great Review, this movie was truly a trainwreck.

There was definitely too much exposition in this movie. It feels like someone was telling a joke for an hour then instead of giving us the punchline, they just started explaining why the joke was funny.

I wasn’t all too bothered by that, I thought it was okay. There was nothing terrible about all that. It’s what comes afterwards that’s truly appalling. The way they beat Doctor Doom and that moment when Miles Teller’s face changes, it’s all just embarrassing.

Your description of Dr. Doom is amazing. Now I want to see this movie!!!!!!!!!!

Haha, thanks Tom! Doom is horrid in this movie and not in a good way

You have to respect the source material in order to do a good comic book or video game movie. Everyone involved has to respect the source material.

I think they just wanted to do a different take since the last ones didn’t work out. But I think this movie had far too many other problems that really ruined it

Nice post. Its a shame Miles Teller got mixed up in this BS

Thanks man. He’s too good of an actor to be doing crap like this.

too true, I’ve only seen him in Whiplash but I’ve heard his other work is good too. Perhaps he was the cast-memeber making the comments at the end of this article 😉

Great read that one. The director sounds like a right tosser

I’ve heard a lot about the director, this tweet reportedly lost studio 10m in revenue but I think it’s the studio that should take most of the blame. It’s so obvious while watching the movie that entire chunks have been cut out. First studios bring indie directors on these big-budget films and then expect them to be pushed around. They can’t have it both ways

This is unusual for you – normally you go against the negative consensus in your reviews. This MUST be bad! 😛

I usually try to find as many positives in a movie as I can and I was actually excited to see this movie because I’m not bothered by other reviews but this was just a travesty

That score! My daughter is begging me to take her to see this…and I’m like…can we see Ant Man instead? I never imagined, a year ago, that I would be saying that.

Haha, don’t subject your daughter to this, it isn’t any fun at all. Go for Ant-Man instead.

Yep, it sucks in almost every regard. They definitely screwed up Doom. His helmet melded with his face yet there isn’t a single feature of his helmet that stands out on his face. I looks like they melted a piece of Tupperware on his face and called him Doom. S-T-U-P-I-D!

Exactly. Speaking of stupid how the hell did he get that hood? nothing about him makes sense.

Apparently there is a clothing and apparel store in that dimension. I dunno. He just pulled it out of thin air.

I really liked almost every aspect of the film. It wasn’t amazing enough to give an 8, but I gave it a solid 7. I liked the characters, the visuals were solid, the writing was good apart from the language. The final action scene was pretty epic and it was just a very interesting and enjoyable film to watch. For total specifics, I really liked the ending as the heroes got to finally get their own building like in the comics and I also really enjoyed the modern day fair where Reed tried to show off his invention.

My problem was that I hated all this stuff. I loathed Sue Storm, I think her character was poorly written and Kate Mara did absolutely nothing with her performance, same for Jamie Bell. Doctor Doom was just a travesty in this movie and I hated the final battle as well where it basically took them all to punch Doctor Doom at once and he was toast, considering the fact that Doom could do pretty much anything, this was really disappointing. But again, I respect your opinion and I’m glad you were able to have more fun with this than me.

I prefer the 2005 version. I heard that there will be a sequel in 2017.

Yeah even the 2005 one is better than this one, mainly because something actually happens in it.
I hope not.
